403-1 / Scrolling Lotuses
6.9×9.4 feet

Above: A re-created version in 2015. In 2005, Caravan Classics completed the recreation of this magnificent
piece using all traditional methods. This carpet features a refined and elegant color palette, with its smooth
curves serving as a prime example of the “soft” weaving technique characteristic of old Ningxia carpets.

The image above shows the ancient carpet from the early 19th century,

presently in the collection of the Textile Museum in Washington, DC.

On the upper right is a re-created carpet made by Caravan Classics in 2005.
The hand-drawn cartoon gives the carpet a painting-like visual effect. By a
close look, every flower and every leaf is different. The design combines
movement and stillness, curve and straightness, emptiness and solidity,

perfectly embodying the essence of Chinese classical aesthetics.

On the right is a 2008 revised version with lighter field color, in a classical Ming
interior. Patterns similar to those on this carpet appear in both Chinese silk and
porcelain, reflecting the continuity of expression across different media within
the same culture.
